Index V1.3
Background
We are facing a new global pandemic for which, as of today, we lack both the capacity and the resources to address:
- By 2030, mental disorders will be the leading cause of disability worldwide.
- Nearly 1 billion people suffer from some form of mental health disorder (25% of the global population = 1 in 4).
- Around 20% of the global population suffers from chronic pain or disability, with 5% resulting from mental health-related diseases or disorders.
- In Spain, an average of 11 people die by suicide every day (1 every 2 hours), with 75% being males and 80% of them diagnosed with some psychiatric disorder.
- In the European public healthcare system, there is an average of 18 psychologists per 100,000 inhabitants, whereas in Spain, there are only 6, and waiting lists range from 3 to 5 months.
- 80% of the Spanish population with low (below €20,000/year) and medium (between €20,000 and €30,000/year) incomes do not receive adequate treatment.
Challenge
Of all the challenges we face, at Aware we are primarily concerned with an unsustainable situation that requires immediate attention:
- More than 30% of patients diagnosed with various mental disorders do not respond to standard or first-line medical treatment (1 in 3).
- It is known that the rate of resistance varies depending on the complexity of the disorder, the severity of symptoms, the presence of comorbidities (the existence of multiple simultaneous medical conditions such as chronic stress), and the individual patient's response to treatment.
